Go Fund Me

Too many dogs are homeless and many are being euthanized daily.  We also have a problem with the over population of cat colonies in Randolph County.   As the Humane Society of Randolph County, our goal is to decrease the number of unwanted animals euthanized in Randolph County, to educate the public on ways they can help reduce the unwanted pet population in our county, and assist with emergency situations

All funds raised in this effort will go for spaying and neutering dogs and cats in Randolph County.  None of it will be spent on administration or for any other purpose.  Our goal is to help as many people who need assistance spay/neuter their cats and dogs.   Please give as generously as you can; the need is great.

In Memory of Janice Frazier Coakley

A Life Dedicated to Animals and Compassion

Janice Frazier Coakley passed away in 2024 after a lifetime devoted to service. Her career working with animals spanned decades and took her to institutions such as Busch Gardens, the Houston Zoo, and the North Carolina Zoo, where she served as a Veterinary Technician. Her work included caring for animals in exhibits, administering anesthesia by dart gun, and handling situations that required both courage and precision. Janice’s deep knowledge, intelligence, and steady demeanor made her an invaluable asset wherever she worked.

A Foundational Member of HSRC

For more than 30 years, Janice was a dedicated member of the Humane Society of Randolph County and played a critical role in reviving the organization after a period of inactivity. She served in multiple leadership roles—including president and treasurer—and was instrumental in establishing our low-cost spay/neuter program. She also played a vital role in our foster program.

Janice rescued and fostered countless cats, dogs, ferrets, goats, frogs, and turtles, caring for their medical needs and working tirelessly to find them loving, permanent homes. She administered vaccines, treated injuries and illnesses, and provided guidance to fellow foster caregivers. Whenever HSRC needed help, Janice was there.

A Life of Service Beyond Animals

Janice’s compassion extended far beyond animals. She fostered adolescent girls, offering support and stability at some of the most challenging moments in their lives. While fulfilling a lifelong dream of traveling to Africa, she met a young woman whose education she chose to sponsor. Janice gathered support from family and friends to cover the cost of the young woman’s high school education, continuing that support until graduation—a life-changing gift for someone she would never meet again.

During her travels, Janice also had the opportunity to meet Jane Goodall, a moment that deeply touched her. She lived gently, taking only what she needed and leaving a small footprint on the world.

A Lasting Legacy

Janice and her close friend, Paige Wilhoit—who also played a key role in reinvigorating HSRC—coordinated spay/neuter surgeries at the NC Zoo hospital. Veterinary interns performed the procedures while HSRC volunteers assisted with preparation and documentation. This partnership created invaluable opportunities for our organization.

After 27 years of service at the NC Zoo, Janice retired to Oriental, NC, in 2019, fulfilling another lifelong dream of living on the coast. She leaves behind her twin sister, Virginia, and Virginia’s husband, Howard Price; her foster daughter, Stacey Scott; her grandson, Colton Wise; and countless friends.

Her legacy lives on in the thousands of lives—human and animal—that she touched with her compassion, dedication, and generosity. She never sought recognition and never complained about the work she took on. Janice was, and will always be, a truly remarkable person.
